Sustainability Thinking

An ongoing frank and open dialogue with technical and political institutions and organisations as well as with society at large is of paramount importance to VinylPlus in order to be able to exchange views and gain valuable feedback for our activities and initiatives. Special attention has been given to address and engage our younger generations. Sustainable development concerns us all, but especially young people who will have to live tomorrow with the consequences of decisions taken today.

Sustainable Thinking Platform

Following up on the huge success of the essay competitions organised by Vinyl 2010 in 2007-08 and 2008-09, the Sustainable Thinking Platform was created in 2010 to continue promoting a wide debate about sustainability issues. Its community, comprised of young people from all the around the world, gives members the opportunity to exchange ideas and share their artistic creations.

Young people from all around the world are invited to discuss how the use of natural resources can be made compatible with the needs of today’s consumers and industrial societies. Today, the Sustainable Thinking Platform has more than 3,000 members from over 115 different countries. This project was presented at the CSD‐18 of the UN in New York in May 2010, where it was very positively received.

The VinylGame

Originally created by Vinyl 2010, the VinylGame is a computer game challenging players to manage a virtual PVC industry in a sustainable way. Participants are faced with the daily socio-economic and environmental decisions involved in running their own PVC business.

Whilst it remains fun to play, the choices made in how the company is run illustrate the challenge of balancing economic growth with sustainable development. Within the game, the negative consequences of playing purely based on economic growth without regarding production safety, environmental consequences or issues such as recycling quickly become apparent.  The virtual society in the game may even opt to respond and take actions, as trade unions can decide to go on strike.

In October 2008, the VinylGame was awarded the Italian prize ‘Premio Aretê 2008' for responsible communication in the videogames category by a panel of judges chaired by the Italian Minister of Environment, Stefania Prestigiacomo.
