Sustainable Development

Sustainability will not be achieved through wishful thinking. Sustainable development depends on real commitments and actions, by real people in the real world.

In line with, and anticipating, the 2002 Johannesburg Earth Summit Declaration, which stated that the private sector "has a duty to contribute" to the drive toward sustainability, the European PVC production and converting chain has recognised its social responsibility and has been working hard since the mid 90s to ensure that the challenge of sustainable development is taken seriously.

The first Voluntary Commitment was signed in the year 2000 and implemented through Vinyl 2010. The European PVC industry, which today represents around 21,000 companies and employs half a million people, has put into practice an integrated approach to deliver responsible, full-cycle product stewardship. This means continually improving production processes and products, investing in R&D and technology, minimising emissions and waste, as well as boosting collection and recycling.

Through VinylPlus, the industry has set ambitious targets with a view to realising the full market potential and societal benefits of sustainably produced PVC.
