VinylPlus® supports VIL and Denuo in the recycling of medical materials
VinylPlus® proudly announces its collaboration with the Select4Care project, aimed at increasing the recycling volumes of medical PVC in Belgium. Through enhanced medical plastic waste collection and sorting logistics, spanning from hospitals to recyclers and converters, VinylPlus is committed to advancing sustainable practices within the healthcare sector.
The reuse of medical materials is currently complex. Given strict hygiene regulations, single-use will remain the norm in hospitals for a long time.
VinylPlus supports Select4Care, a project by VIL and Denuo created to see an opportunity for high-quality reuse of materials.
Design for recycling
Select4Care focuses on selective collection, sorting, dismantling, and high-quality recycling. The project will explore the processes needed to enable the reuse of these materials: these processes may range from optimizing logistics processes to the co-creation of new materials. All these co-creation sessions will focus on “design for recycling”.
“Reducing environmental impact”
Behind the project are twenty organizations, including hospitals, manufacturers of medical materials, custom and day-care centers, and waste and recycling companies.
Antwerp hospital AZ Monica is one of the participants helping to find sustainable solutions.
“The waste production at our medical technical services has been a thorn in the side for our institution for years. Not only the volume and cost, but also the impact on the environment is alarming. Surely it should not be the case that a sector committed to providing care to people, such as the medical sector, does not pursue the best care for our environment too. This is why we are joining this project,” said Jo Claes, Technical Director, ICT and Prevention General Management, AZ Monica.
Project participants: ACG, AZ Monica, AZ Rivierenland, Borealis, Dialex Biomedica, Ziekenhuis aan de Stroom (GZA & ZNA), Kunnig, MIVAS, Oesterbank, OTB, Renewi, SABIC, SGS Ewacs, UZ Antwerpen, UZ Brussel, UZ Gent, UZ Leuven, Vanheede Environmental Group, Veolia and vzw Maria Middelares.
This project is funded by Flanders Circular and VinylPlus®, the European PVC industry's voluntary commitment to sustainable development.
